    A Sleeping Z: The Nissan 300ZX

Seriously so sedih lah to see it tucked away in a corner of kl, once again I recently jalan jalan saw an abandoned 1985 (i think) Nissan 300ZX. Its once-sharp lines now softened by time, the badge barely clinging to the front (kesian). Yet even in its resting state, this Z-car carries the weight of a proud legacy.

The 300ZX, known internally as the Z31, was launched in the mid-80s as the successor to the 280ZX. It marked a new chapter in Nissan’s legendary Z-car history. With pop-up headlights, wedge-shaped styling, and a more modern, aerodynamic body, the 300ZX was very much a product of its era lah, no doubt one. so like bold, futuristic, and ready to take on the world 9or racing racing).

Under the hood, the 1985 model carried Nissan’s VG-series V6 engine, a big big step forward from the inline-sixes of earlier Z-cars. It came in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged (tambah kuah power) versions, with the turbo model pushing the 300ZX into proper sports car territory. For its time, it was quick, balanced, and offered a driving experience that cemented the Z’s killer miller reputation among enthusiasts for sure one. (i have personally never driven this model lah, but i did get to drive the 280z) .

To understand the 300ZX, you have to see it as part of the Z-car evolution. It all began with the 240Z in 1969, a simple, affordable sports car that shocked the world with its beauty and performance. That was followed by the 260Z and 280Z, which added more power and refinement through the 70s. Then came the 280ZX, which leaned more towards luxury (sikit atas type interior also), but kept the Z spirit alive. Finally, the 300ZX arrived in the 80s, pushing the line into a new era of technology and design. Each generation carried the torch, making the Z a true icon of Japanese motoring.

In Malaysia during the 80s, the 300ZX was a rare and coveted sight. Imported in small numbers, it was the kind of car that made people stop and look see look see, with its long bonnet, flared arches, and those oh-so-cool pop-up headlights. For many, it symbolized the golden age of Japanese sports cars, when performance met reliability and style.

That’s why finding one abandoned today feels bittersweet (really sayang to see). To most, it’s just an old, forgotten coupe. But to those who remember, this 1985 Nissan 300ZX was once a dream machine. I think it’s something a car that carried Nissan’s sporting spirit into the modern age (my two cents lah). Even as it rests quietly in KL, it still holds the aura of a classic waiting for someone brave enough to bring it back to life…
