A Sweet Spot from the 70s: The Toyota KE20

Every now and then, a car comes along that doesn’t need to be rare, exotic, or flashy to make me/you smile. For me, that moment came recently when I spotted a nicely kept Toyota KE20. Nice and kinda simple 70s classic, sitting with quiet pride. Does not look abandoned lah, it wasn’t kinda hiding under little dust instead, it looked refreshed, alive, and ready to take you for a spin.

The KE20 was part of the Corolla family, introduced in the early 70s, and it quickly became a favorite all over the world (i think) including here in Malaysia. It wasn’t about brute power or luxury, it was like about reliability, affordability, small fellow and a design that somehow aged gracefully. The round headlights, compact body, and unmistakable stance made it the kind of car you could spot a mile away. Back in the day, it was a family’s first new car, a student’s dream machine, or even a young professional’s pride and joy.

The one I saw looked like it had been given a tasteful refresh, not overly modernized, but with just enough love to make it shine (check out the rims too). The chrome glistened, the paint tidy lah, cannot make fun all nd you could tell its owner cared deeply about preserving its spirit. Seeing a KE20 like this is a reminder of how much personality small cars used to have. Even standing still, it gives off a cheerful energy, as if it’s saying, “Come on, let’s go for a drive down memory lane.”

What’s so special about classics like the KE20 is the way they connect generations. For some, it’s a reminder of their father’s car in the 70s; for others, it’s a newfound appreciation of Japanese engineering that stood the test of time. And unlike so many cars from that era that vanished into scrapyards, seeing one survive & lawar at the same time feels like a victory for nostalgia.

The Toyota KE20 might not roar like a sports car or glide like a luxury sedan, but it has something many modern cars lack – Some say soul. And sometimes, that’s more than enough. Will leave the location at the bottom if you guys want to go have a look see look see… Till the next find all of youse…
