Could It Be? 80s Fiat Ritmo 131 TC (Maybe the Elusive Abarth?)
Every once in a while, you spot a car that makes you stop in your tracks and rub your eyes, its like ah! did I really just see that? That was exactly my reaction when I stumbled upon what looked like a 1980s Fiat Ritmo 131 TC sitting quietly by the roadside. And the big question buzzing in my head (betul ke) could this actually be one of the elusive Abarth versions? I am not a pro on the fiats but just know and read about it a little.
The Ritmo / Strada, as some markets called it, was Fiat’s funky little hatchback from the late 70s and 80s. Squared-off edges, sharp Italian lines lah, and a character all its own. But the 131 TC was the fiery one in the family. Fitted with a twin-cam 2.0-litre engine and a sportier stance, it had the soul of a hot hatch. In its Abarth guise, the Ritmo was something special lah form what little i have read, a proper performance machine with motorsport blood running through its veins.

The one I saw had all the right whispers of that magic. The body lines were there, the proportions looked right, and even after years of Malaysian sun and rain had dulled its paint and weathered its trim, you could sense that this was no ordinary hatchback. But was it really the legendary Abarth 131 TC? Or just a regular Ritmo that had once dreamed of being one?
That’s the beauty of stumbling across cars like this, betul betul the mystery is half the thrill. Maybe I’ve uncovered a rare Italian gem that somehow found its way here, or maybe it’s just a humble Ritmo that still sparks imagination. Either way, seeing a 1980s Fiat like this in the wild feels really nice.
