The Gorgeous Return of a 1982 Alfa Romeo Alfetta 2.0

The Gorgeous Return of a 1982 Alfa Romeo Alfetta 2.0

Every once in a while, life gives you a surprise that feels like turning back the pages of an old book (car book lah heheheh) you once loved. A few days ago, after nearly two years, I bumped into my old friend Roy M, or more accurately, I bumped into his pride and joy, a stunning 1982 Alfa Romeo Alfetta 2.0, sitting beautifully at the mechanic’s shop.

When I first saw this car two years ago, it was still deep in the process of restoration under the skilled hands of our mutual friend, Ray F. Back then, it was a nearly bare lah, a promise of what it could one day become. Roy himself had that kinda spark in his eyes that only an Alfa gila owner can understand, that dream of hearing the twin-cam engine sing again & the alfa carbs sucking induction sound, and of bringing back a piece of Italian motoring soul to Malaysian roads.

And now, seeing it completed, I was simply blown away. The Alfetta looks gorgeous. Its lines…. just sharp yet graceful man!! remind you why Alfa Romeo has always been more than just a carmaker. The proportions, the stance, and of course that unmistakable Italian character are all there, restored to their full glory.

What struck me the most was the paint. Roy went the extra mile, literally by sourcing that perfect shade of blue directly from Italy, the very hue that matched the original Alfetta models of the era. Under the sunlight, it doesn’t just shine shine but it glows MAN!!, as if the car itself knows it has been given a new lease of life. That kind of dedication speaks volumes about the love and passion behind the project.

For me, the Alfetta holds a personal connection. I once owned one myself, before I let it go about a year ago. It was that shared bond with the Alfetta that brought Roy and me together when we first met two years back. And seeing his car now, so beautifully finished, makes me both nostalgic and excited. Nostalgic because I remember the feel of the Alfetta’s steering in my hands, and excited because I can’t wait to reconnect with Roy (hheheheheheh udang sebalik batu tu!) and hopefully get behind the wheel of his masterpiece for a test drive.

Cars like the Alfetta aren’t just machines. They’re stories on wheels. Stories of dedication, patience, friendship, and passion. Roy’s 82 Alfa Romeo Alfetta 2.0 is living proof of that, simply a gorgeous Italian classic lah that, against all odds, has been brought back to life right here in Malaysia. Here got some of the other nice pics…

A Little History of the Alfetta 2.0 (most from the net lah)

The Alfetta name dates back to around 72, when Alfa Romeo introduced a completely new sedan that combined Italian flair with innovative engineering. Its most famous feature was the transaxle layout — the gearbox mounted at the rear, paired with a De Dion rear suspension. This clever design gave the Alfetta superb weight distribution and handling, a characteristic that set it apart from many of its rivals.

By the late 70s and early 80s, the Alfetta 2.0 had become a symbol of stylish yet practical Italian motoring. The 2.0-liter twin-cam engine was lively, free-revving, and full of that distinct Alfa character is like raspy, eager, and soulful. Unlike many sedans of the era, the Alfetta carried itself with grace, balancing sikit sikit sportiness with everyday usability.

In Malaysia, these cars were not that rare as even our police had used it back in the 80s like that and often admired from a distance. Owning one meant you were part of a small club of enthusiasts who understood the charm of Italian cars (or tayang those day’s police cars.. hehehe), the beauty, the quirks, and of course, the pure joy they delivered on the open road.

That’s why seeing Roy’s Alfetta today feels so nice lah. It isn’t just a restored car, it’s a restored piece of Alfa Romeo history, standing as a reminder of a time when sedans could be both practical and passionate.

And I, for one, can’t wait to hear that Alfa sing again. Roy also thanks all the mechanics/wireman/interior etc. on this build to get it looking beautiful again.
