The Roadside Luxury: A Lexus SC300

Every kereta tells a story lah, and some stories deserve to be remembered. The other day (jalan jalan again), I came across a Lexus SC300 left quietly by the roadside, looking tired and forgotten. To many people who pass by, it’s just another old coupe past its prime. But for those who know, the SC300 was once a shining superrr star, and spotting one in Malaysia back in the 90s was always something special.

The SC300 was launched in the early 90s, built on the same platform as the legendary Toyota Supra. Under the hood sat Toyota’s bulletproof 2JZ-GE inline-six engine — yes, the same family of engines that became world-famous with the Supra. Smooth, durable, and capable, it made the SC300 not only luxurious but also a hidden performer, a “gentleman’s Supra” in disguise.

But it wasn’t just the engine. The SC300 was a true head-turner. Designed in California and tested in the wind tunnel, its sleek, flowing lines stood out from the boxy cars of the late lapan puluhan. In Malaysia, where Japanese sedans ruled the roads, seeing an SC300 glide by was a rare rare sight, a coupe with elegance man, class, and just the right hint of performance (for tayang). It was the sort of car you’d see outside KL hotels or cruising on the highway, instantly marking its owner as someone with refined taste.

Inside, Lexus gave it all the refinement the brand was becoming known for: plush leather seats, wood trim, and that bank-vault build quality that set new standards at the time. It wasn’t just about getting from A to B oni, it was about arriving in style and comfort (like lansi lah).

That’s why seeing one now, abandoned by the roadside, feels super sad lah. The once glossy paint now faded, the body weathered, its proud stance sagging with time. Yet, even in this state, the SC300’s shape still has a timeless beauty.
